KV Baltic has started designing the State Data Centre to be built by Telecentras

Press release, 6 October 2020

AB Lietuvos radijo ir televizijos centras (Telecentras) has started the design of a new State Data Centre (VDC) in Vilnius. The contract for the development and certification of the VDC project in accordance with the highest Tier III quality standards was signed with UAB KV Baltic.

Ministry of National Defence 3 February 2020 approved one of the data centers currently managed by Telecentras as a public data center. The Government will also introduce a new 26 August 2020 approved Telecentras’ proposed VDC expansion project, under which 4 data centers in Vilnius and Kaunas should be built and operational by Q2 2022.

We are well aware that the State’s long-standing strategy to consolidate the data centres it manages needs to be implemented as quickly as possible. With plenty of time for discussion, the project implementation period has now begun, with specific deadlines. Our VDC development aims to build a reliable and efficient government IT infrastructure, preventing incidents that bring individual institutions or industries to a halt. ” – says Remigijus Šeris, CEO of Telecentras.

The design work is being carried out by UAB KV Baltic, the Lithuanian branch of the Norwegian company that owns the Kryptovault and Colonor brands. The design contractor was selected through a competitive tender process, based on expertise, experience, as well as completed and ongoing projects in Lithuania and abroad. KV Baltic specialises in the design, construction and maintenance of data centres. The company’s engineering and management team has many years of experience in building and operating data centres and has completed many projects in various countries, including Lithuania.

“We are delighted that our team’s expertise and international experience was recognised in the selection process. We see the design of a national data centre not only as a job, but also as a great honour to contribute to the construction of a national facility of major importance. Security, uninterrupted data centre operation and modernity are the highest priority aspects of what we will design the VDC for. It will be a building that will meet the needs of every institution and allow civil servants to focus on their work without distractions.”– says Renaldas Galdikas, CEO of KV Baltic.

According to the terms of reference, a 100-cabinet, Tier III-compliant VDC will be built on the Telecentras site in Vilnius. It is envisaged that the VDC’s power and capacity can be expanded to twice its original capacity if required. The design and certification phase of the facility will be completed in Q2 of next year, at which point construction work will start. The data centre is expected to be commissioned in Q2 2022.

As part of the project, Telecentras has already started discussions with future service users on the scope of the IT infrastructure and their needs. The design of the next data centre will also start shortly. The second duplicating national data centre should be operational in the beginning of 2023.
